Because the game doesn't have an opposing admiral(or ships for that matter), so you MUST use "Auto Battle" because otherwise it tries to call something that isn't there, so to prevent an infinite loop, it crashes. One obscure crash that will ALWAYS cause a crash is if you try to attack a system in the Campaign that doesn't have an army, but has defences(Turrets or a Starbase). Sometimes the game crashes due to other reasons, idk what are those(mostly Unreal I think). With that said, most of my crashes and lockups are due to the Ship Viewer in the "customize fleet".
